If you've been following me for a while now, especially on social media, you'll know that I have four children - two two legged and two four legged kids! :-)
Our beautiful girl, Jessie - RIP
Lilly when we first brought her home
Max and Lilly - friends or foe?
Max came into our family first, and was closely followed by Jessie, who sadly left us a week before our wedding as a result of a tragic accident. When we returned from our honeymoon, we added Lilly to our family. Since then we've welcomed Lachlan and Will to our clan and we love every day with all our kiddies - especially in summer when you're likely to find all of us at our local dog-friendly beach!
About two years ago, we started noticing that Lilly's nose was losing it's pigment. As time went on, we noticed that she was constantly licking her nose, and that her skin had an irritation as well. After many visits to the vet, and LOTS of different medications and an expensive medical biopsy, we got the news that she had lupus which is basically a disease where the body's immune system has become hyper-defensive, attacking the cells, organs, and tissues of its own body as if they are diseases that need to be destroyed.
Originally we were on REALLY expensive medication - which she will probably need all her life. But thankfully, a review of the treatment saw us using a topical cream on her nose, along with a mix of Doxycycline (a broad spectrum antibiotic) and Niacinamide - in laymen's terms, Vitamin B3!!!! Luckily, we just have to purchase this from a chemist - as we buy in bulk iHerb has been the best place so far. We've cut out vet bills down considerably, and I'm glad to say our little girl in on the improve. It will be slow, but hopefully the pigment on her nose will return and we'll just have to manage the condition.
